BIOGRAPHIES OF Officers and Directors for 2022

Commodore - Terry Russey

Born and raised in Fort Worth (AHHS), I earned my BBA and MBA at the University of Texas.


1970 – 1974: I was a computer salesman for IBM in Beaumont and Houston.

1974 – 1983: I was a computer services salesman, Branch manager in Houston and Los Angeles, and Director of Marketing for Tymshare, Inc., based in Cupertino.

Aug 1983 – Dec 2018: I founded and served as President and CEO of Greentree Systems, Inc, providing recruiting, employment and on-boarding systems to large hospitals and companies in other industries throughout the United States.

After almost 36 years I retired and turned the company over to my employees. Still Chairman and majority stockholder, I am involved only at the end of each year.

Faith:  I attend Carmel Presbyterian Church.

Hobbies:  I play tennis and golf, kayak and sail, hike and party with my beautiful wife Paula, cheer for the Giants and the University of Texas, watch Jeopardy and CBS Sunday Morning, wash dishes, rake leaves, and am an active volunteer in the Stillwater Yacht Club, where I’ve been a Board or Emeritus member for 15 years (2011 Commodore.)

Family:  I have three grown sons and two grandsons, all living within 200 miles of PB, and a wife who never gets older.

Vice Commodore - Michael Jones

Michael was born and raised in Tom Bean, Texas, a small farm and ranch community 60 miles north of Dallas. Two weeks after graduating from high school, he entered college and earned a BS in Economics in 3 years and later received an MBA from The University of Dallas.  Began his career in Banking, but, after 2 armed robberies in 3 months, decided a “course correction” was in order. Thus, a 40 year career in the Telecommunications industry ensued where he held roles in many disciplines including finance, strategy, customer service, marketing, and sales. The last 15 years were spent leading multi-national organizations as an Executive Vice President & General Manager for 3 different foreign based firms.

Michael was introduced to sailing in the 70’s. As the years passed, sailing became more and more of a passion. An ASA certified sailor, he has chartered and personally captained 45’ - 55’ sailboats in the British Virgin Islands several times. Having owned a couple of used boats, he bought a new Hunter 33 in 2006 and sailed it regularly until selling it in 2016.

Charitable organizations have also been a continual part of his life and he has served on several advisory boards.

Retired in 2015 and moved to the Monterey Peninsula full time in 2017. Michael and his wife, Lynsey, reside in Carmel.

Rear Commodore - John Lotz

John Lotz has been active in the Monterey Communities since 1974. He and his wife Margaret have been members of the Beach Club since 1978 and of the Yacht Club for five years.

John graduated from the Harvard Business School in 1971 and was hired as the Vice President of Business Development at Standex Int’l Corp, NYSE. They returned to California in late 1973 where John continued with Standex as the Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of four divisions of Standex. He also transferred from the Air Force Reserve to the California Air National Guard (CANG). He retired from the CANG in 1997.

One of the divisions he managed locally, was the Hidden Hills Land Company. He and two local partners bought the project from Standex in 1983. That subdivision is known as Bay Ridge. During this period, he built high end spec homes, completed a subdivision and build out in Hollister and owned other companies in general aviation and giftware manufacturing.

He has been deeply involved in community affairs since moving to the Peninsula in 1974. He was active in the Monterey Peninsula Chamber-Visitor and Convention Bureau and was Chairman of the Board after 18 years of service. He has served on the boards of the Private Industry Council, the Affordable Housing Corporation, and CETA.

Today, he is serves on the Board of Directors of Monterey County Bank and the Sheriff’s Advisory Council. He also volunteers as the Chief Pilot of the Sheriff’s Aero Squadron flying tactical missions for the Sheriff’s Office. He is an active Mergers and Acquisition Broker and consultant affiliated with a firm in New York City.

While in Boston, John and his wife, Margaret, helped restore the Noreg III, a six meter day sailer made for the King of Norway. They had many sailing adventures sailing the coast of New England. John has always been involved in ocean sports – scuba diving, boating, body surfing, swimming and kayaking. He has completed the Basic Keelboat Sailing Course.

Staff Commodore - Judy Furman

Judy Furman has been with SYC since 2015 and started with the Social Committee working the Pier BBQs at the Check-In Table, then finding volunteers to staff both Check-In and the Bar, took sailing lessons and joined Thursday Night Sailing. In 2017, she became a Board member and co-author of the 2017 Members Survey. In 2018, she worked on the Membership Committee and the Sailing Committee where she took over the recruitment for the Youth Water Sports Program utilizing the school districts, Boys & Girls Club, CPY and the SYC members. Judy was a Host for YWS and worked on Event Decoration.

2019 as the Vice-Commodore was a whirlwind of activity…coming up with event ideas, decorations, wine, music, food, seating, working with our valuable decoration mavens and with the Beach Club for dates and rsvps for each event.  Judy served as Commodore in 2020, and seeks re-election to this position in 2021.

Prior to SYC, Judy spent many years in Special Events/ Fundraising for a regional Theatre and Human Resources Director in the retail industry nationwide. She relocated to Carmel-by-the-Sea in 2000.

Judy has a B.A. from Santa Clara University.

Secretary - Joan Wood

Joan is a retired teacher. She and her husband, past commodore Parker Wood, live with their two cats in Corral de Tierra.   Joan and Parker met while sailing as crew on the boat of a mutual friend and for many years campaigned their Mercury sailboat in SYC fleet races.  No longer an active competitor, Joan continues to support SYC by serving on the Race Committee for annual events such as the Santanarama and the Mercury Labor Day Regatta.

Joanie has served as SYC Secretary in 2020, and seeks re-election to this position in 2021.

Treasurer - Joan Hoover

Joan Hoover retired in 2018 after a 30-year career at Apple Inc. most recently as the Director of Investor Relations.  Joan joined Apple in 1987 as a financial analyst working in the International Division and held various positions over the years in Pricing, Market Tracking, Corporate Development and Market Research.

Joan and her husband, Jim Rabjohn, are long-time volunteers with German Shepherd Rescue of Northern California and have fostered over 50 dogs in their home over the years.  She has held the Treasurer’s position since 2004.  They currently own three German Shepherds and can be seen walking them every morning around the Del Monte Forest.

Since retiring, Joan has become involved with The Peninsula Club, a local women’s club.  She accepted the position of Treasurer in 2019, which also includes a board seat.

In 2020 Joan graduated from “docent school” to become a full-fledged Point Lobos docent and enjoys pulling non-native plants and weeds in the Reserve whenever she can.

Joan, a former Peace Corps Volunteer, has a BA in French Literature from the University of California, Berkeley and an MBA from Columbia Business School.

Port Captain - Charlie Kurtmen

Charlie Kurtmen, Past SYC Commodore (1997), has served as Port Captain for SYC for decades and as an SYC Board Member for equally as long.

Over the years, he has served on the Sailing and Safety Committee, the Youth Sailing and Thursday Night Adult Sailing Committees, Regatta Race Committee, Finance Committee and Strategic Planning Committees.

He started sailing as a boy on a 8’ wooden sail boat in Istanbul, Turkey. He immigrated to the US and served in the US Army, later settling in Fresno and pursuing real estate. He graduated from Fresno State with a graduate degree in Art History, and a prior degree in French.

He has owned many boats over the years, both motorized and sail boats.

He supervises all mooring installation and maintenance, the hiring of sailing instructors and Harbor Masters, fleet maintenance and storage and all Pier activity. He is a certified ASA Sailing Instructor (levels 101-210) and is certified as a Merchant Mariner Captain.

He has won many a Santanarama. He loves fishing, a nice wine and enjoys participating in SYC Social events.

Fleet Captain - Dick Clark

Dick Clark, SYC’s Past Commodore of  1988 has served as Fleet Captain and Board Director for SYC for just as long. He has the distinction of being SYC’s longest standing member having joined in 1963.  His list of sailing accomplishments is legendary! He is a six-time Mercury Class Champion, a five-time Veeder Cup Champion, four-time Morse Cup , and two-time Shields Champion.  He is our current Regatta Chairman and has performed in this capacity for SYC for years.  This year he hosted and chaired 4 Regattas for us: the Commodore’s Regatta, Santanarama and Shields Regattas and our Labor Day (Mercury class) Regatta.

Dick grew up here, served in the Navy, and returned to this area to pursue a career in real estate.  He and his wife Judy enjoy a life long passion for sailing and you will find them both at SYC social events, at Regattas in the Race Committee boat and around the fitness pool. 

Webmaster - LeBon Abercrombie

Born and raised in Visalia, CA, Abercrombie earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in speech and drama from Stanford University in 1965.  He then served for five years in the U. S. Navy Supply Corps, and received an MBA from the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration in 1972.

He worked at Dairyman’s Cooperative Creamery Association until 1974, when he joined System Integrators Inc, a supplier of computerized text editing and typesetting systems for the newspaper industry, where he served as Vice-President and General Manager until 1980, and remained a director of the company until its sale in 1988.

Abercrombie retired in 2008 from Pappas Telecasting Companies, where he was Senior Executive Vice-President/ Planning & Development. Prior to this, he was General Manager of KMPH TV, Fresno, from 1987 to 1992.

He currently is also the webmaster for Del Monte Forest Property Owners, and is Treasurer/Webmaster of the Stillwater Club. He has served on the Stillwater Yacht Club board as Webmaster since 2011.  He is a licensed pilot (single & multi engine land, instrument rated).  He and his wife, Mary Jane, have two grown children, and reside in Pebble Beach.

Director - John Bohlman

Born in Portland Oregon, attended University of Oregon and graduated with a B.S. in History and minor in Business. Completed military service at Fort Ord with the Oregon National Guard, and moved to San Francisco in 1959 where he was hired by Tidewater Oil Company in Marketing. He later became Regional Manager with Phillips Petroleum, left to start his own business Toro Petroleum in 1970, marketed in Central California, and retired in 1985.

John served on the board of Union Oil and British Petroleum Marketing Advisors. He married wife Kitty in 2005, and they have five children and nine grandchildren.

John started sailing on the Columbia River with a Flattie 18, moved on to a Mercury 18, then Catalina  22, Rhodes 19, Garden Design Yawl 50 and then a 42' Hunter.

He has been member of the Beach Club and Stillwater Yacht Club for 42 years.

Director - Bill Cash

Bill Cash, his wife, Lisa, and their two sons, Graham and Elliot have been active members of Stillwater Yacht Club since 2014 and have been members of the Beach and Tennis Club since 2007 while still living in Southern California. Before deciding to make Pebble Beach their permanent home in 2013, the Cash family took every opportunity to visit the Monterey Peninsula to enjoy long weekends and summer vacations. During these visits, the Cash boys began their love of sailing as campers in the SYC Youth Sailing program, where they grew over the years to become camp volunteers and eventually capable sailors and sailing instructors.

Once SYC members, the Cash family was hooked and embraced most every opportunity offered including; sailing, kayaking, paddle boarding and attending Pier BBQ’s and many of the social events. Additionally, Lisa has enjoyed volunteering on the Social Committee and meeting many members while checking them in for Pier BBQ’s. Bill is ASA certified and is currently working on the next level of sailing certifications thanks to Charlie Kurtmen. Bill, originally a Carmel native, spent many summers at the Beach and Tennis Club and sailing in Stillwater Cove, and has enjoyed sharing his passion of the area with his family.

Bill has had a 28-year career in commercial advertising as a photographer and director working with advertising agencies to bring their concepts to life.  Bills’ specialty is automotive advertising and he has collaborated and launched national automotive campaigns for many brands.  Throughout his career, Bill has been featured in numerous advertising publications.

SYC has become a wonderful connection and has meant so much to the Cash family, and Bill is ready and willing to serve to be able to give-back and help to enhance the SYC experience.

Director - Tom Duffy

Tom was born Jacksonville, Florida in 1949. Raised in rural Alabama, he did his college work at Dartmouth College and Stanford University as an undergraduate, with a bachelor’s degree from Stanford, 1971. He was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ethiopia 1971-1972, working to eradicate smallpox. Tom then attended USC Law School (where he was selected for law review), and then Boalt Hall (Univ. of California at Berkeley) Law School, graduating in 1975 (where he was a member of the Industrial Relations Law Quarterly).

He was a practicing attorney for 44 years with an emphasis on commercial litigation matters, and retired in 2019. He is now a professional mediator concentrating on business and real estate disputes. , Tom is a member (inactive) of the United States Supreme Court Bar Association, California Bar Association, Monterey County Bar Association, and Santa Clara County Bar Association.

Tom has been a member of SYC from 1978 to present, has been on the Board of Directors of SYC for many years, and has twice served as past Commodore. He is also a member of St. Francis YC, and is a past member and a director of Monterey Peninsula Yacht Club.

Tom is married to Wendy Duffy, who grew up sailing on El Toros in Stillwater Cove, and whose family have been SYC members since its inception.

For the last several decades, Tom and Wendy actively campaigned a number of Mercury racing sloops, the most recent of which (“Tomfoolery”) left the Duffy fleet in 2018. Tom and Wendy also owned and raced a Santana 22 in Monterey for many years, and have crewed and raced on various boats in Monterey and in the San Francisco Bay, including Mercurys, Shields, and Santa Cruz 50’s. They have frequently chartered bareboats in the BVI, and especially look forward to teaching their two granddaughters to sail in Stillwater Cove.

Tom’s non-sailing interests include a nonpaid career as a ski patroller and avalanche instructor at Bear Valley with the National Ski Patrol. He was the National Ski Patrol’s divisional avalanche supervisor for many years, and received an NSP National award in 2004 for service and leadership.

Tom’s SYC interests are focused on the Sailing Committee and getting more SYC members out on the water.  He is running for another 3-year term as a Director in 2021.

Director - Bruce Fairbanks

Bruce has owned a home in Carmel for 25 years. His career has been in financial management of healthcare systems including CFO at University of Mississippi Medical Center, UT Southwestern Dallas Medical Center and UC Davis Medical Center. 

In his retirement he will be a lecturer at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey.  He is a supporter of The Marine Mammal Center and the need to protect our oceans. 

A fifteen year member of the Beach Club he is a fixture in the hot tub, a regular on the golf course, and always one of the last to leave the dance floor at SYC.  Bruce was elected to a 3-year Board term in 2020 and currently serves on the Finance Committee.

Director - Denise Foderaro

Denise Foderaro was our 2019 Commodore and is Staff Commodore for the 2021 election slate. She served as Vice Commodore in 2018 and as a Board Director in 2017.  Since 2015 she has served on several SYC committees including: Membership, the Cove’er, The Directory, Social/ Decorating, Photography,  and the Sailing and Safety Committees. She is currently pursuing her ASA basic keel certification.

Denise resides in Pebble Beach with her husband and has been a member of the Beach Club for 20 years. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Occupational Therapy from the University of Pennsylvania in 1978 and specialized in the rehabilitation of physical disabilities, including stroke and cardiovascular rehabilitation.  Retired now, she was also a certified hand therapist.

She currently serves on two Advisory Boards (The National Registry of Exonerations, and the Quattrone Center for the Fair Administration of Justice) and is currently serving a second term on the Board of the Innocence Project in New York.

She enjoys marathoning, spinning, Theater, kayaking ,  motor boating/ sailing and decorative arts.  She has a daughter who works as a teacher and a son in law who is a Captain and Aviator in the US Marine Corps.

Director - Bruce Graham

Birthplace: Carmel, California 1958

Bruce started sailing at Stillwater Cove in 1968. His forty years of professional experience in yacht deliveries consists of numerous coastal and international destinations. International deliveries include the Caribbean, Central America, Canada, and Mexico. Transpacific deliveries range the South Pacific Islands and Hawaii with final conveyance to various points on the West Coast. His current log of waters crossed is over 150,000 miles. Sailing and power yachts that he has delivered include both luxury cruising and racing categories with lengths from 40 to 115 feet. Bruce has also participated in numerous international races which involved the designing, constructing, and commissioning of many well-known racing yachts. Additionally, Bruce has been involved with the management and restoration of numerous privately-owned yachts.

He has been a SYC Board Member since 2014.  Bruce serves a Harbormaster, assists with Pier and Boat Maintenance and has an interest in developing SYC's Historical Archives.  He is running for another term as Director in 2021.

Director - Sharene Hamrock

Sharene moved from the East Coast to California in 1976, and lived in San Francisco & Marin County before moving to Los Gatos in 1980.

Graduated from Miami University of Ohio, with a BA in Education.  After teaching for one year, she returned to Miami U. and earned a Master of Education degree in Administration, Supervision and Curriculum development. 

Sharene moved to Washington DC area and taught Public school for two more years, before taking a Sales position with IBM. 

In 1976, she fulfilled a lifetime dream of living in California.  She moved to San Francisco to be a Salesperson with Xerox in the Financial District.  After several years, working with Corporate Companies, she started studying Commercial Real Estate, so she could begin her real estate career with Coldwell Banker Commercial Division in San Francisco, specializing in Office & Retail Leasing, and land sales.

Her casual time was spent playing tennis and she began playing golf with her son 25 years ago.  For eight years she and her son traveled to Jr. Golf Tournaments and Golf Camps throughout the country.  They were very active in the Palo Alto Hills Jr. Golf team.  She is currently a member of Quail Lodge Golf Club. 

Sharene has lived in Pebble Beach for over 24 years.  In 2003, she moved from the Silicon Valley to her current Pebble Beach house, full time.

She has been a Beach & Tennis Club member since 1998, and a SYC member for over eight years.  It has been a fun adventure for her to exchange Burgees with several international Yacht Clubs. 

Sharene has enjoyed the SYC events for many years, and has been an active volunteer on various committees, including Membership and Social committees.  She looks forward to taking a more active role in SYC.

Director - Paul Hoffman

Born August 22, 1950 in Bronxville, NY, a suburb 30 minutes north of Manhattan.  Attended Catholic grammar school, high school, and college.  Graduated with a BS in Finance from Fairfield (CT) University (1972).  Paid my way through school by working various jobs at Winged Foot Golf Club – caddy, pro shop, car valet, etc.

Started my career as a stock broker on Wall Street but got lured into the computer field, working for companies such as IBM, Oracle, and Informatica.  Retired in 2013 and relocated from Atherton (CA) to Pebble Beach.

Board activities: Monterey Symphony Board (2014-2017), Carmel Mission Finance Committee, SPCA for Monterey, Chartwell School, Montage Health Foundation, Stillwater Club

Active Lay Minister at Carmel Mission Basilica: Eucharistic Minister, Lector and Usher. Also a member of the choir.  Provisional in Order of Malta focused on the sick and the poor (activities include two pilgrimages to Lourdes, feeding the homeless, caring for the elderly, sick, and imprisoned).

Member of the Beach & Tennis Club, Monterey Peninsula CC, and the Stillwater Club.

Married my wife, Marianne, on May 10th, 1980. She passed away on September 11th, 2017.

Served on SYC’s Membership Committee in 2017 and on the Social Committee for “Round Up” in 2018.  Paul was elected to a 3-year term in the Board in 2020.  He currently serves on the Finance Committee.

Director - Sharla Klingel

Sharla Klingel has been a Member of SYC since 2016, along with her husband, Martin, and two children. In that time, she and Martin have honed their sailing skills, become ASA-certified by our own Captain Charlie Kurtmen, and have registered their young children in our sailing program every summer. Sharla and her family became full-time residents of Carmel in 2019, having moved across the country from Virginia, and they are excited to be spending even more time in and around the water.

Sharla grew up in a northern Virginia suburb of Washington, DC and graduated from the University of Virginia with a B.A. in Foreign Affairs in 2000. She received her law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law in 2004.

Sharla has significant training and experience related to nonprofit board work, including a six-week training course at the Center for Nonprofit Excellence in Charlottesville, VA, where her course work covered board service and nonprofit governance (including use of committees, strategic planning, board recruitment, development and evaluation, fundraising, and finance). For three years, she taught the Nonprofit Clinic at the University of Virginia School of Law, lecturing on all aspects of nonprofit law, state corporation requirements, and nonprofit best practices. Other legal experience includes almost a decade at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP in Washington, DC (first as a full-time associate, later as a contract attorney), where she focused on commercial real estate transactions.

In addition, Sharla has worked and volunteered in a variety of civic and service agencies, including representing children as a Court Appointed Special Advocate and as a Guardian Ad Litem for children. She served on the board of directors of Child Health Partnership for over five years, including two years as Board Chair.

Sharla currently serves on the board of directors of the Monterey County Women Lawyers Association, and is Co-Chair of their Programs Committee. Sharla’s service on the SYC board includes her role as Editor-in-Chief of the Cove’er newsletter and membership on the Policies, Bylaws, Social, Membership, and Sailing Committees.

Director - Sherif Michael

Sherif Michael is a Past Commodore (2016) and has been an active Board member of SYC for many years.  Re-elected in 2020, Sherif will serve the second year of his 3-year term in 2021. 

He is a competitive sailor, chartering a Shields boat to hone his racing skills. He belongs to the SYC Sailing Academy and owned a Columbia 25. 

He is no stranger to the water- he is an avid Skin/Scuba Diver and spear fisherman. He has served on a myriad of SYC committees, including Membership, the Directory and is a back up technical resource for all things electrical such as web issues, security and mechanics at the pier.

Sherif is a former pilot, and a world traveler. He lives with his wife Barbara and is the proud Dad of Mark Michael who under his Dad’s tutelage has become an accomplished racing sailor, an SYC sailing instructor, and recent Harbor Master .

Sherif grew up in Cairo, Egypt. He holds masters degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and University of Virginia  in electrical and industrial engineering and a PHD from University of Virginia in Electrical Engineering. He has authored over 100 technical articles in professional journals. Currently, he is a professor of electrical engineering at the Naval Postgraduate School specializing in integrated circuit designs, radiation effects, space craft design, solar cells and renewable energy.  His involvement in professional organizations  and service on corresponding Boards are many.

Director - Sharmila Singh

Sharmila Singh joined Stillwater Yacht Club a few years back and immediately enrolled her daughters, Zamina & Avani, into the youth sailing program. The entire Singh family fell in love with the sailing program and Zamina and Avani continue to flourish as sailors.

Sharmila's interest in the yacht club grew exponentially - she enjoys Thursday Night Sailing, the Pier BBQs, but most of all seeing her daughters progress as bonafide sailors. Sharmila's husband, Kern, is also an active participant in the Adult Sailing programs and has developed a passion for the sport, thanks to SYC. With the family's sincere involvement, it made the perfect transition to take on a role as a Director.

Outside of the yacht club, Sharmila is a founding attorney of the Singh Law Firm, where she focuses exclusively on estate planning and trust administration. She earned her undergraduate degree in Business Administration at the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley, and her Juris Doctorate degree from UC Hastings College of the Law. Above all, Sharmila's passion is for her girls and her handsome husband.

Director - Dr. Robert Superko

Robert Superko was born at the US Navy Hospital in Bethesda Maryland and followed his father (US Navy Captain) every two years as his father moved from duty station to duty station.  Several tours of duty were centered in Coronado California where he learned to sail at the Coronado Yacht Club. His education included UC San Diego, State University of New York-Stony Brook, and UC Davis.

As a research cardiologist, with a focus on genetics, he has held positions at Stanford University, University of California and Atlanta Georgia. He has authored 323 scientific/medical manuscripts including 20 medical text book chapters. He is a Fellow of the American Heart Association, the American College of Cardiology, and the American Association of Preventive Cardiology.

He met his lovely wife, Brenda, in Atlanta and between them they have 4 adult sons.  Currently, through a non-profit organization, their professional focus is on a community Firefighter and Police heart disease and COVID-19 avoidance program.  He is a physician member at the Prima Heart Clinic in Monterey.  He is an enthusiastic sailor and a student of Charlie Kurtmen, holding American Sailing Association certifications ASA 101, ASA 103, and ASA 104.

Brenda and Robert have participated in multiple SYC activities since joining over 4 years ago, including serving as a member of the board of directors, the lobster fest, multiple pier parties, Thursday night sailing races, helping on the pier and SCUBA diving at Stillwater Cove.
